The cushions for a reclining chair or a chair that has seats long enough to provide complete leg support are referred to as chaise lounge cushions. You’ll find these chairs inside, however, you’ll most often find them outdoors for sunbathing or on a patio to provide somewhere to stretch out and relax. Chaise lounge cushions are going to make your sunbathing or relaxation time even that much more comfortable.

Since there are chaise lounges for both indoor and outdoor use, you’ll find that the material for the chaise lounge cushions is going to vary. Foam stuffing and common fabric coverings will usually define the indoor chaise lounge cushions. In order to provide sun, rain and all other external factor resistance, the outdoor chaise lounge cushions are made more specialized through utilizing materials, such as, polyester, Outdura, acrylic, Sunbrealla or olefin.

All of the aforementioned materials are lightweight while maintaining durability, which is something that makes them ideal for outdoor cushions. Additionally, they’re flexible enough so that your cushions won’t wrinkle or begin to deform as time goes on. Furthermore, they’re mildew, fading, along with being stain and mold resistant.

Cushions that are purposed for the outdoors will need to be waterproof due to the elements that come with nature are very harsh. Most typically, the indoor chaise lounge is going to have a design that’s more of an extended chair, utilizing features like a headrest and the ability for someone to elevate their feet and recline.

There is an exceptional amount of style variety that you can get with the chaise lounge chair, such as, attached armrests, double headrests and you can even find matching footrests separately.

Indoor chaise lounges will most typically have their cushions filled just like any other upholstered piece of indoor furniture. The beauty of the chaise lounge is on the outside and its covering. It provides all of the attractiveness, and this is especially the case if your chaise lounge is purposed toward radiating opulence, which you’ll find through coverings of velvet, satin and other expensive fabrics.

Other than just the cushion material you’ll find an endless amount of pattern and color options. From the block color, to solids, Asian prints and just about anything else you can want. If you end up not liking how it looks, you can simply have it reupholstered as you would an old armchair or your couch. If the cushion is still in excellent condition and you just want a change you can have it done with the cushions as well, since they’re also an investment.

Its summertime, you’re out tanning, reading the latest romance or crime novel, your margarita or other favorite drink in your hand, and you’re enjoying it more than many others because you’re out on your patio enjoying it in your chaise lounge.

The First of Its Kind

The famous modernist architect, Mies van der Rohe, got his inspiration by the chairs that were on the decks of cruise ships, and used that inspiration when he was developing the revolutionary piece of furniture, the chaise lounge. Rohe initially conceived the chaise lounge as it hooking to the rail of a ship; however, he later began to give the chair a base and began introducing it into homes. You can see the true versatility of the chaise lounge through many of the contemporary chaise lounge models, such as, the ones listed below.

Modern Styles

Aluminum Chaise Lounges

The aluminum chaise lounge is something that’s lightweight and durable. The chaise lounges that you’ll find on a patio will most often have an aluminum frame and come in a wide style variety. You could find them featured with things like, fabric cushions, vinyl straps or a fabric sling material. You’ll find that the patio chaise lounges will most often be stackable, containing adjustable backs, and perfectly proven to provide for a nice nap in the summer sun.

Wood Chaise Lounges

You’ll find some of the most elegant of all the patio chaise lounge furniture is constructed using fine woods. For instance, tropical and cedar hardwoods, such as, balau and teak, will give the patio chaise lounge a classic beauty through rich texture. Provided they get the proper level of care, they’ll prove to be wonderful heirloom pieces.

Furthermore, you’ll find a wide variety of chaise lounges are eco-friendly. The chaise lounge is something that’s always inspired experimentation from designers, which is something that’s lead to a lot of the more recent patio chaise lounge developments, such as, research into recycled plastics from milk jugs, etc…

Rattan and Wicker Chaise Lounges

The wicker patio chaise lounge is something that’s embellished wraparound porches for many decades, and has brought a touch of sophistication into the outdoors. Whether it’s a Bar Harbor or Victorian style chaise, simple or ornate, or anything else, the wicker chaise lounge is something that invites you into a relaxing summer afternoon in either the sun or the shade, promising you both durability and maximum comfort.

Although the aluminum chaise lounge has a significant number of responsibilities, it’s still something that’s built for comfort. Some of the aluminum chaise lounge responsibility requirements are as follows:

It has to be durable enough to withstand both extreme weather conditions and intense sunlight

It has to be easily adjustable without pinching clothing, toes or fingers

It has to be light enough to move easily, while still being heavy enough to not tumble over on your patio or off of your deck with normal wind gusts

Essentially, the aluminum chaise lounge is something that works very hard to make you be able to relax comfortably quite easily.

Perfect for the Pool

The aluminum chaise lounge is something that could be made of drawn or extruded aluminum tubes. Both drawn and extruded aluminum are made through different processes. The process that drawn aluminum goes through makes it much more flexible, while still providing more strength than its counterpart.

Aluminum chaise lounges are the ones that you’ll most often see with the vinyl straps, easily stackable, adjustable headrests, and light enough to either be pushed or moved across the patio or poolside.

Casting Call

When it comes to the leading material in outdoor furniture, however, is cast aluminum. You’ll find the cast aluminum chaise lounges will have a much more classic and antique appearance, very much resembling the intricately designed cast iron pieces. The cast aluminum chaise though is going to be much lighter than one that’s made out of the more traditional cast iron; however, it’s much more solid than the lounge that’s made from extruded aluminum tubes. Another advantage that the cast aluminum chaise is going to have over cast iron is that it’s much more resistant to rust.

Strong and Beautiful

The cast aluminum chaise lounges are made from a cast mold, whereas the aluminum chaise lounge is made from extruded aluminum that’s composed of hollow tubes that are fitted together. The process is done through a sand mold that has molten lava poured into it. Once the aluminum is hardened and completely cooled the sand will be knocked away. Through using this method the furniture maker is able to incorporate fine details into the design leading to an aluminum chaise lounge that’s full of strength and beauty.

The initial period of the 20th century saw the rise of the wicker furniture; in particular, wicker chaise lounges. The wicker chaise lounge is something that’s been the perfect outdoor reclining piece. Whether it’s found crafted from banana leafs, sea grass, water hyacinth, rattan or any other material, wicker chaise lounges have been interpreted within wicker furniture’s 4 key styles:

Stick wicker

Art deco

Victorian

Bar harbor

Such Style

The stick wicker chaise lounge style is something that dates from the early 1900s until the 1920s, which is marked by modernist inspirations. The stick wicker chaise lounge is something that is suggestive of the prairie style that is so closely associated with Frank Lloyd Wright, as it has an attention to geometric and angular design, and is streamlined and sleek.

Once the 1920s came around, the French art deco style bank to make its influence and mark upon the American wicker chaise lounge. You’ll find the art deco style marked by zigzags, rectangular patterns and diamond shapes, while the frames will feature legs that are flared and edges that are curved.

Intricate beadwork and weaving, along with lavish curlicues and scrolls is something that classifies and defines the Victorian style wicker chaise lounge. Although you’ll still find the wicker chaise lounge produced in the Victorian style, the origins of American wicker dates to the middle of the 19th century.

Last but not least, the Bar Harbor style has its origins dating from the turn of the century until and through the 1920s and is found to be much more subdued than the wicker chaise lounges found in the Victorian style.

At times you’ll find mission style influences in certain Bar Harbor wicker chaise lounges. The name of this style is something that references the place of its origins, Bar Harbor, Maine. The Bar Harbor style wicker chaise lounge is going to most often featured lattice work that’s in diamond shapes, and edges that are either squared or rounded.

After they’ve been used for a number of years, the cushions on the chaise lounge starts to become faded and stained. Commonly, the furniture’s frame will still be in really good condition, however, the cushions will no longer be attractive. Purchasing new cushions is something that presents many challenges, such as:

Replacement can get expensive

Matching the color and pattern you want to work with can be difficult

Keeping that in mind there are options that will let you re-cover the cushions for your chaise lounge and have the same color and pattern without expensive replacement and search time of trying to find the premade cushion match.

You’ll first need to survey the cushions currently on your chaise lounge. You’ll want to see what the condition the foamed stuffing is in and determine if it’s still usable. If the stuffing isn’t in decent enough condition you’ll want to size the cushion first, and then purchase the appropriate amount of fresh foam or other stuffing material. Ensure that if you need to purchase new material you’re purchasing material that’s explicitly intended for use outdoors.

After that you’ll want to measure the old cushion so you can quickly and easily make the determination on the required yardage. After that you can purchase the yardage you need and add in some extra to do things like matching patterns and stripes along with making ties so you can make sure the chaise lounge frame has the cushions securely fastened to it.

Once you’ve done those things you can purchase the new fabric. Make sure that you purchase fabric that’s sun resistant if you’re going to be leaving the cushions outside for a long period of time.

Next, you can create the cushion pattern through using newspaper. You’ll want to go ahead and do this while making sure that you’re allowing for another inch of space on all of the sides so you can allow for seam space allowance. After that you’ll be able to take the old ties and make note of their length before proceeding.

Once you’ve done that you can begin cutting the new foam through using the pattern you made from the newspaper. Afterward, you can cut the fabric through using the pattern you drew and also cut the fabric for the ties.

Sewing the seams of the fabric is going to be next. Ensure that you leave an open end so you can account for the stuffing and then turn it right side out. You’ll need to attach and sew the ties to the cushion cover through using the same positioning found in the old cushions. Furthermore, you’ll need to sew the Velcro to both of the sides of the cushion covers open ends.

Finally, you’ll be able to take the new cover that you’ve made, stuff the cushion into it, and finally secure it through fastening the Velcro openings that you attached. You’ll complete the process by attaching the ties to the frame of the chaise lounge and then you can relax on your chaise lounge and take a much deserved break.

Once this is all done you’ll have made matching cushions without having to go through all of the expense and the time it’d take to find a cushion match in a store, which you might never be able to do, and save a lot of money along the way too.

Although you can find an exhibition of modernist sophistication from the leather chaise lounge, you’ll find a wide variety of characteristics when it comes to the upholstered chase lounge. Some of those types are as follows:

An opalescent sheen appeal like you’d find on an old time Hollywood set

Snazzy lime ultra-suede that’s an apt piece in almost any contemporary bachelor pad

Buttons and tufts, velvet lined, that’s suggestive of an old Victorian parlor room

Stylish Comfort

The furniture designers of today, when they’re creating an upholstered chaise lounge, find themselves with the freedom to incorporate many different sensibilities, styles and influences. That’s not even to mention the colors to choose from, such as, cobalt blue, plum, cherry red and other lively colors. The upholstered chaise lounges that you’ll find today are ones that invite you to recline and relax, along with still being able to hold an admiration for their swooping lines and for its curves.

Storied Past

Although you’ll find the upholstered chaise lounges in the contemporary furniture stores exhibiting a sharp and cosmopolitan type style which is perfect for a discerning bachelorettes bedroom, the upscale bachelor pad and others, the chaise lounges have been accented by upholstery for centuries.

The late 18th century in Great Britain was a substantially influential furniture making period. Mahogany was something that proved to be the most ideal for carving, and the ornate woodwork surrounded the pillows and chaise lounge cushions within a variety of different patterns. There are some very elegant reproductions today, along with antiques which have been reupholstered, featuring cushions made out of velvet and silk.

You’ll find the contemporary upholstered chaises will incorporate the elements that you saw in the more classic upholstered chaise lounges. Those are elements like the high back, straight lines and a long seat. Furthermore, they did away with the woodworking and completely draped the entire chaise lounge in fabric, complete with a ruffled skirt along the chaises bottom edge.

There is one type of furniture that has a very colorful and long history. The royalty of the medieval ages reclined on them. Cleopatra from ancient Egypt was found on one. Renaissance courtesans kicked back on them. Now the fashionable homes are craving them.

So what is this piece of furniture? This type of furniture is known as the chaise lounge.

In the past the chaise lounges were found to be a cliché, which you’d only find in a psychiatrist office or in old Hollywood photos. Now this has all turned around as they’re making their resurgence in the luxurious homes of today.

Although the proper name has been Americanized, its actual name means long chair, chaise longue. The term got Americanized when the furniture industry in America incorporated the furniture’s use into the name, thus leading to the chaise lounge as it’s known as today.

Most typically, the chaise lounge is going to be made like a couch, backrest will be on the short end, instead of spanning on the long side. Unlike the couch, however, the chaise lounge is made to normally be used by just one person at a time. The backrest that’s on the short end is going to let the user lift and stretch their legs out over the extended cushion.

Chaise lounges straddle the extended club chair and couch line. In fact, many of today’s popular chaise lounge designs actually are inspired by the traditional club chairs. Often the chaise lounge will work like a combination of an ottoman and club chair, however, still offer the convenience of one-piece construction.

In the late 1800s to the early 1900s this seating form was very popular as an indoor piece in American homes. The outdoor chaise lounge began to take hold as the American population began to grow and sprawl into the suburbs, thus finding a permanent place on the patios of America. Due to the fact they’re built for relaxation, the outdoor chaise lounges was a logical step in progression and a perfect fit.

The machine for rest is something that Le Corbusier, modern chaise lounge designer, called them. Life today is exceptionally hectic making it no wonder why the chaise lounge has once again become popular and is making a massive resurgence into homes across America and beyond.

Modern chaise lounge designs offer a multitude of choices for both relaxations inside and outside of the home. They’ll fit perfectly into open spaces, and no matter the need, you’ll be able to find the perfect chaise lounge for your space and situation.

Quick history question! Can you name the most famous chair in history? There is actually no one answer to that question and it depends on who you ask. Some of the answers you might have thought of could be as follows:

The famous 1970s chair from the All in the Family television series Archie Bunker always sat in (now sitting in the Smithsonian Museum)

The Louis XIII

The chair of Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome

The Chippendale chair

All of those and other answers are definitely famous, however, one of furniture’s most innovative pieces, making both style and social statements, is something that emerged from the 1920s modernist movement, the leather chaise lounge that was brought to us by the Swiss architect Le Corbusier.

Challenging Conventions

There are so many reproductions offered of this groundbreaking furniture piece, however, most that look toward purchasing one might not know that the leather chaise lounge is actually the bold statement of a very controversial architect. One immediate thing that you can’t miss though is the light tubular steel, sleek curvilinear style, round headrest and long cushion.

Le Corbusier was considered quite controversial in the time due to the fact that he challenged the conventional modes of urban planning and design. The leather chaise lounge that Le Corbusier produced is something that was meant to be an efficient, adaptable piece of furniture that could be mass produced while still demonstrating a strong commitment to art and beauty.

Throughout the years, there were critics that accused Le Corbusier of promoting lofty and authoritarian ideals. Meanwhile, his leather chaise lounge has now come to be regarded as a classic furniture piece of the 20th century.

Although the leather chaise lounge was conceived by Corbusier to be the solution for the home furnishing “problem”, through creating a piece that was easy to move and assemble, has since become something associated with sophistication and glamour. The leather chaise lounge brings about many connotations socially that are somewhat more of a historian, rather than an interior design topic.

Whenever you relax by reclining on a leather chaise lounge, you’re going to be thinking of cigars and martinis, much more than you’d ever be thinking about social change.

Modern Man

Keeping the cigar in the conversation, masculinity is another element that was introduced into the chaise lounge style. Prior to the leather chaise lounge from Le Corbusier, the chaise lounge was something that had always been flowery and overstuffed, feminine and extremely ornate. The chaise lounge had been something that was much more appropriate for a fainting woman that was taken in by the vapors instead of the man that was more accustomed to sitting by the fireplace in a wingback chair.

Interesting enough though, it was actually a woman, Charlotte Perriand that had worked very close with Le Corbusier when he was working on his famous leather chaise lounge.

The cushions that are used for every category of reclining chair that has seats that are adequate length wise to support a person’s legs are referred to as chaise lounge cushions. You’ll find that the chaise lounges are mostly utilized outside for sun bathing or just taking the time out to relax or stretch. The chaise lounge cushion is something that makes it significantly more comfortable, in order to achieve relaxation.

Although a lot of purpose is for outdoor use, the chaise lounge cushions and the chaise lounges themselves are found for both indoor and outdoor use. It’s for that reason that you’ll find a significant level of variation in the cushions.

The cushions for the indoor chaise lounge will most often be foam stuffed and then covered with a common pillow fabric. On the other hand, the outdoor chaise lounge cushions are going to be further specified as they’re going to have to resist, rain, sun and all other external outdoor factors. Due to that fact you’ll find that they are made out of materials that are synthetic, such as:

Olefin

Polyester

Outdura

Acrylic

Sunbrealla

Those materials are durable and lightweight which makes them supreme for open-air chaise lounge cushions. Additionally, they’re flexible which ensures that the chaise lounge cushions don’t wrinkle or deform. Finally, they’ll be resistant to fading, stains, mildew and mold. Cushions specifically made for outdoor use needs to be waterproofed due to the elements of nature and their harshness.

You’ll find that chaise lounge cushions come in many different style types, such as, attached armrests, double headrests and also even matching separate footrests. The indoor chaise lounge is going to be intended as an extended chair that has a head support and also the capability for someone to elevate their feet and recline.

The filling of the indoor chaise lounge cushions is going to be like another piece of indoor upholstered furniture. The outside covering is going to be where you’ll have all of the beauty and attractiveness, especially for the chaise lounge cushion that’s meant to be radiating opulence. You’ll find in those instances the chaise lounge cushions will be covered in velvet or satin.

Other than just the cushion material, the colors and the patterns that you can choose from are virtually endless. From solid, to Asian print, block color, paisley and just about anything else. If you end up not liking the way that it works or just want to go for a change, you can find it as easily reupholstered as an old armchair or a couch.

There are going to be two parts that will come with the chaise lounge cushion:

Long part for the seat

Short part for the back

Furthermore, you’ll find that some of the cushions will be fixed to the chairs while there are others that are able to be detached. You’ll find that although not all of the chaise lounge cushions are reversible, a lot of the detachable cushions will be. Additionally, the cushions can be channeled, stitched or quilted. You’ll find them very useful as decorations with all of the different prints and colors they come in.

The chaise lounge cushions are a very special type of cushion that’s used for the chaise lounge reclining chairs that have the long seats in order to accommodate long legs. The chaise lounge is something that’s amazing for napping, relaxation or sun bathing on a nice day. The cushion is what makes the chair much more comfortable through the neutralization of pressure from the chaise’s hardness and the angularity of the chaise’s materials. Many chaise lounges aren’t complete without the utilization of chaise lounge cushions.

After you’ve had an amazing swim in the lake, pool or ocean, there are not a lot of things better than just relaxing in the sun while on one of the many outdoor chaise lounges you have to choose from. If you top that off with a plush, soft cushion you’ll be relaxing lavishly in comfort, and can do so directly in your own backyard.

Formerly the staple of the resorts on your vacations, the chaise lounge chair is now beginning to pop up on poolside and on patios throughout the nation, allowing people to relax in comfort without ever having to leave their home.

The best type of wood for outdoor furniture is teak wood, so you’ll find a lot of outdoor chaise lounges constructed from teak. It allows you to challenge Mother Nature, at least a little bit, allowing yourself to relax without worry, season after season. For a teak chaise lounge you’ll want to make sure that you treat it with a teak protector every year if you wish to have it maintain that natural hue of a golden brown, or you can simply just let it weather to a delightful silver gray if you’d like. Regardless, you’re going to have an amazingly comfortable seat to kick up your feet, settle in and relax in comfort.

In order to take it up a few notches and increase your comfort level you should consider adding in chaise lounge cushions. You’ll find them around 2-2 ½ inches in thickness and available in a multitude of color and pattern fabric choices.

With everything to choose from you’ll be able to match your motif regardless of if you want a specific shade of pink or an intense blue or virtually anything else. The best part of it all is that, if you care for them, they’ll last you almost as long as the chaise lounges itself. Specifically designed for the outdoors, the cushions will be water resistant, and the sun won’t be able to fade them of lively hues. You’ll be able to leave the chaise lounge cushions out virtually all season with their teak counterparts with virtually no worry. Provided you give them their minimal required maintenance, they’ll last you year after year.

So the outdoor chaise lounge is going to be the perfect comfort indulgence when you look to make your next patio, deck or poolside furniture purchase. It’s time to toss out that foldup, rusty, plastic lounge chairs you have, where the backs won’t stay up any longer and make an investment in something that’s going to provide you ultra-comfort with timeless style and beauty.

Regardless if you’re looking for something a little more posh by your pool, or just a relaxing or lazy spot for you to sit outside in the morning and enjoy that first cup of coffee, or winding down after a long day with the kids or at work, the chaise lounge is the perfect thing for you. You can lay them out flat and get some sun and take a nap, or you can put the back of the chair up so you can read while enjoying a cocktail or cool drink on a hot summer day. Irrespective of how you position your chaise lounge chair, up, down or somewhere in-between, you, your family and your friends will be able to soak up the sun through endless summer comfort.

It really is just that easy to be able to get away from it all, at least for a while. Every person needs to have somewhere to go and unwind from their day and relax in your own personal retreat. Lay out in your chaise lounge chair and you can imagine yours right in your own backyard.
